Indian Translators Meet 2005

The first ever Indian Translators Meet, New Delhi, held on 17th September 2005, was organized under the convenorship of Founder of Modlingua, Mr. Ravi Kumar who took the initiative to bring translators from all corners of India under one platform. 

This  Indian Translators Meet 2005 evoked a keen interest within the language community members. The presence of language associates from different parts of India including representatives from the country’s premier language service providers, senior government officials, distinguished faculty members from many Universities, delegates from MNCs and established as well as emerging freelance translators-interpreters is a testimony to the importance attached to this event.

The meet was presided over by the Chief-guest Mr. R. Viswanathan, Head, Latin American Division in the Ministry of External Affairs. In addition, Prof. Anil Dhingra from Jawaharlal Nehru University made presentations on the use of software for harnessing the necessary technologies for bringing in qualitative improvement and increasing the efficiency levels of translators. The problems being faced by the translators community in India as on date and how we can address them and finally the steps being taken for formation of “Indian Translators Association” were the hallmarks of this Meet.

This conference was sponsored by BhashaIndia, the indic language division of MicrosoftIndia. Microsoft exhibited its premier productivity programs suite, Microsoft Office 2003, fully configured in Indian languages, as a toolkit to facilitate the work requirements of the modern translator. Adequate emphasis was given on the future of Indian languages and the services extended in Indian languages by the translation industry.

In all, the Indian Translators Meet 2005 has turned out to be a crucial step towards uniting translators and interpreters community in India and has instilled a sense of togetherness in them with expressions of the desire to form an Association, the Indian Translators Association. Infact this conference turned out to be the forerunner of Indian Translators Association.
