Success Stories

julianDr Julián Zapata is the founder and president of InTr Technologies, a Canada-based translation services and technology start-up.

He is a long time friend of Modlingua group. Dr Julián as well Mr Ravi Kumar, Founder of Modlingua Group both were the colleagues in PhD Program in Translation Studies at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Upon request of Mr Ravi Kumar, Dr Julián Zapata has agreed to deliver a guest lecture during Summer Internship Program at Modlingua where more than 150 interns are undergoing intensive training in various aspects of Translation, entrepreneurship and technology.

On July 03, 2018, In his lecture on "The Interactive Translation Dictation", Dr Julián will explore interactive translation dictation (ITD), a translation technique that involves interaction with voice-and-touch multimodal interfaces throughout the entire translation process. Many empirical studies in human-computer interaction have strived to demonstrate the efficiency of voice input versus keyboard input. Although it was implicit in the earliest works that voice input was expected to completely replace—rather than complement—text-input devices, it was soon proposed that voice recognition often performed better in combination with other input modes. Further, he will discuss voice recognition technology and multimodal interaction, and the extent to which these emerging forms of human-computer and human-information interaction have been used and investigated in translation. Lastly, he will also explain to the summer interns about the avenues for future work.

Brief Profile

As a young boy, Julián discovered a fascination for anything related to languages and effective communication, from reading and writing poetry, to taking part in his high school’s public speaking competition. He grew up speaking Spanish and began learning foreign languages at teenage when he decided to pursue a career in translation and interpretation.

Julian completed his studies in translation and translation studies at the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he also taught for several years English, Spanish and French translation; terminology and terminotics; and translation technology, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He also took part in several exchanges and student mobility programs and studied at ISIT in Paris and at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, among other institutions.

Dr Zapata has worked internationally on several projects related to translation process research, language and translation technologies, as well as translator training, with several academic publications and dozens of presentations, guest lectures and plenary speeches in more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
